The Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo stretches from north central Alberta to the borders of Saskatchewan and the Northwest Territories covering 68,454 km2. This area encompasses vast stretches of pristine wilderness, as well as one of the fastest growing industrial communities in Canada. The Municipality contains the following ten rural communities: Anza, Conklin, Draper, Fort Chipewyan, Fort Fitzgerald, Fort MacKay, Fort McMurray, Gregoire Lake Estates, Janier, Mariana Lake, and Saprae Creek Estates. Fort McMurray is the major commercial, cultural, and recreational centre and serves as the headquarters of the Municipality.

The population of the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo is 73,176 and is quickly growing. It has a very diverse population with many people coming for a visit only to end up finding a “home away from home.” Residents enjoy a great quality of life with the availability of all desirable amenities. The best outdoor recreational opportunities exist within the regions, including pristine lakes and rivers, as well as magnificent forests. Visitors come to this region specifically to see the Northern Lights, but can also experience great hunting, fishing, canoeing, and snowmobiling. There are several events throughout the year, but the summer months host a festival or event virtually every weekend.
