Athabasca is nestled in the picturesque Athabasca River valley and resides 150 km north of Edmonton. This community was originally established in 1880 as Athabasca Landing, but was then known as being the “Gateway to the North,” a jumping off point for the goldmines in the north country. Though serving several northern communities, Athabasca is truly a modern city. It serves as the home base for Athabasca University, a world leader in distance learning. Athabasca has a population of 2,415; however, due to its location, it serves an additional population of between 8,000-11,000 people in its market areas. This vibrant community offers leisure opportunities for everyone, including hiking, bird-watching, canoeing, skiing, square-dancing, curling, golfing, snowmobiling, and much more. The town features a great library with more than 25,000 books, videos, and tapes. Athabasca also offers a range of churches and faith communities, as well as many services and community groups.
